Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of Kandla-Gorakhpur LPG Pipeline

Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the Kandla-Gorakhpur LPG Pipeline at a grand function held in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh today. Shri Ram Naik, Governor of UP, Shri Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of UP and other dignitaries graced the occasion.
The Kandla-Gorakhpur LPG Pipeline (KGPL) is being implemented by a consortium of three PSU Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), namely, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. with 50% share, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. as well as Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. each with 25% share.
The 2,757 km cross-country LPG pipeline has been conceived as one of the longest such pipelines in the world, connecting eastern India with the west coast [Gujarat - 1,063 km, MP - 611 km, UP - 1,083 km]
Being constructed at an investment of Rs. 9,000 crore, the pipeline will intake the product from three LPG import terminals (at Kandla, Dahej and Pipavav), and two refineries (at Koyali and Bina). It is then transported to LPG bottling plants of the OMCs en route in the States of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh through feeder lines and branch pipelines.
KGPL would be directly linked with 22 LPG bottling plants of Gujarat (3), MP (6) and UP (13) for product supply. In addition, the pipeline would feed LPG through road-bridging to another 21 LPG bottling plants in Rajasthan, Gujarat, MP, Maharashtra and UP.
Once completed, this single pipeline will transport 8.5 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) of LPG, which is about 25% of India’s total LPG demand. This way, about 34 crore people in the States of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh will directly benefit from uninterrupted supplies of LPG.
Kandla-Gorakhpur LPG Pipeline in Uttar Pradesh
The 1,083-km portion of KGPL pipeline in Uttar Pradesh will provide direct supplies to LPG bottling plants of IndianOil at Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Lucknow & Gorakhpur; of BPCL at Jhansi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Allahabad & Gorakhpur; and of HPCL at Unnao, Varanasi & Gorakhpur.
The pipeline will also supply bulk LPG through road-bridging to 9 more LPG bottling plants in UP, located at Shahjahanpur, Farrukhabad, Kashipur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Saleempur, Bareilly, Sultanpur and two plants at Gonda.
Such movement of bulk LPG through pipeline systems across States and over long distances, instead of by road through LPG bullet trucks, would also reduce congestion on arterial roads significantly, thus making roads safer for movement of passenger vehicles.
LPG pipeline is safe, economical and environment-friendly mode for transportation over long distances. The products reach destinations uninterrupted even in times of natural calamities, road blockades, etc. By transporting LPG through pipeline, there will be negligible environmental impact and low energy consumption and reduced transportation losses compared to other modes of transportation. The operating cost will also be very low, resulting in overall economy in transportation over a period of time.
