Solar power to run world's highest LPG bottling plant in Leh

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), the nation' largest fuel retailer, today said its Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) bottling plant in Leh district of Jammu & Kashmir, the world's highest such facility, will now be run on solar power.

The plant in Phey village is situated at 11,800 feet and supplies LPG to the Indian Army and the far flung areas of the region. The company said it has commissioned a 100 Kilowatt solar power plant at the location to run the plant's operations.

“The plant not being connected to the electricity grid was run using a diesel generator which consumed more than 45,000 litres of Diesel annually. Now with solar plant commissioned the diesel consumption will be reduced by 30,000 litres annually, reducing pollution in the area and saving precious fuel,” IOC said in a statement.

Indian Oil sells 10.8 million tonne of LPG annually. The Leh bottling plant – with storage capacity of 1,500 Kilo Litre -- is among the six such facilities operated by the company in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.
