Bongaigaon Refinery

Bongaigaon Refinery & Petrochemicals Limited (BRPL) was incorporated in 1974 as a Government Company. Situated amidst spectacular green surroundings in the Chirang district of Assam, it is about 200 km west of the state capital Guwahati. Amalgamation of Bongaigaon Refinery & Petrochemicals Limited (BRPL) with Indian Oil Corporation happened in 2009 and the refinery today is part of Indian Oil Corporation and is known as Bongaigaon Refinery.

The first CDU with a capacity of 1.0 MMTPA was commissioned in 1979. The configuration of the refinery expanded with the addition of a DCU in 1981 and a CRU in 1985. The refinery capacity was de-bottlenecked to 1.35 MMTPA in 1986. Moreover, during 1995-96, the Refinery Expansion Project was commissioned with the addition of a CDU and a DCU, and with this, the overall capacity was increased to 2.35 MMTPA. Subsequently to meet environmental norms as mandated by Auto Fuel Policy, MSQU Unit, DHDT/HGU, and SRU were added in 2010, 2011, and 2012 respectively.

To meet the BS-VI specifications some more process units were added during 2020-22 under the ‘BS-VI Projects’ comprising a new Naphtha Hydrotreater, a new SRU, and revamp projects of DHDT and HGU. INDMAX project was commissioned in 2020 along with an increase in crude processing from 2.35 to 2.7 MMTPA.

Refinery Expansion Plans: Refinery capacity expansion to 5 MMTPA is under conceptualization.
