‘Data isn't information, any more than fifty tons of cement is a skyscraper!!’ can be famously attributed to the current challenges faced by the Cement Industry in India. That the success of any engineering marvel rests on a chemical foundation was amply demonstrated in the one day SERVO Cement Meet organized at Chennai, which brought together Eastern Region and Southern Region Cement Customers from eight states.

Organised with an aim to create goodwill and ‘cement’ a better rapport with the Cement customers of Servo products, the one day meet bespoke Innovation and Technology in every aspect. The entry to the venue was with a Self-Check In kiosk, which generated a QR code based ID card. Once an IOCian always IOCian is not just a phrase. It was visible with the presence of Mr. SK Gupta, Retired IndianOil veteran, now Advisor to Dalmia Cements(Bharat) and Mr. R.Suresh, Retd, ED(LT) who chaired the first panel discussion with clarity and precision. The first panel discussion witnessed several thought provoking questions being asked: from “Why are OEM’s not recommending use of Synthetic Oils only?” to “What is the software interphase in gearbox operations?” to “If you rob the right to repair, a customer is almost always dependent on OEM’s for any further enhancements. Why are OEM’s not providing complete solutions to a customer in this industry?”

To a query on “Why Cement industry in India is in the state that it is now. Why is it not looking at exports or imports in a big way. How come small countries like Bangladesh and Pakistan are engaged on larger scale in Imports and Exports of this product than India?” an enthusiastic cement industry professional highlighted “Cement Industry economics does not warrant movement beyond 200 to 300 kms. The high costs involved in transportation, logistics and handling deter high scale movements. Imports and exports are largely port driven. If that needs to be the case, many cement industries need to be located near the ports and not based inland, which would again increase inland movement costs”

During the inauguration Mr. KL Murthy, ED(Lubes), Head Office, Mr. SK Gupta Advisor, Dalmia Cements(Bharat), Mr. Amitabh Akhauri, CGM(Lubes), HO, Mr. Sanjeev Kundu, CGM(TS), HO, Mr. TG Nagarajan, CGM(ILS), TNSO lit the lamp.

Cement Industry is one of the largest industries in the world and occupies a predominant place as one of the basic industries for development and employment generation. India entered into the Cement Era in 1914, when the Indian Cement Company Ltd. started manufacturing Cement in Porbundar in Gujarat. However, even before that a small cement factory was established in Madras (now Chennai) in 1904 by a company named South India Industrial Ltd.!!

Hence it is no wonder that when a strategic meet of this nature had to organized, Chennai was chosen as the location to host East and South Cement Customer’s Meet by Head Office!!
