In a historic first, IndianOil has collaborated with the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) for the transcontinental relocation of 'Cheetah' in its historical range in India. Due to unnatural exploitation, cheetahs were hunted to extinction in India in 1952. The first Cheetahs, flown in from Namibia, were released in the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh by the Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 17th September 2022.

IndianOil is the first corporate which has come forward to support "Project Cheetah" under CSR, as the project has not only national importance but is also essential for balancing the ecosystem. The Company is contributing Rs 50.22 crore over four years for the project components, including Cheetah Introduction, Habitat Management & Protection, Eco Development, Staff Training and Veterinary Healthcare. The Cheetah introduction project in Kuno National Park involves creating a 500-hectare predator-proof enclosure for a soft release of the feline. The introduction would commence in a phased manner with a few individuals after construction of the soft release enclosure and augmentation of protection while other actions are underway. The first batch of cheetahs has been soft released in the enclosure with GPS / GSM or GPS / Satellite transmitters.

This release marks the return of the Cheetah to Indian soil seven decades after it was declared extinct in 1952.
