India’s largest Naphtha Cracker Unit to transform Petrochemical Landscape

India’s largest Naphtha Cracker plant at IndianOil’s Panipat Complex was dedicated to the Nation by the Hon’ble Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Shri S Jaipal Reddy in the presence of Hon’ble Chief Minister of Haryana, Shri Bhupinder Singh Hooda; Hon’ble Union Minister of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation and Culture, Kumari Selja; Hon’ble Minister of State of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Shri R P N Singh; Petroleum Secretary, Shri S Sundareshan; Petroleum Joint Secretary, Shri L N Gupta; Chairman, IndianOil, Shri S.V.Narasimhan; Hon’ble Member of Legislative Assembly, Haryana, Shri Krishan Lal Panwar; Director(Refineries), IndianOil, Shri B.N.Bankapur and other senior officials from IndianOil.
The Naphtha Cracker Complex, built at a cost of Rs.14,439 Crore will provide a significant impetus to India’s leading Fortune-500 Company’s ambitious foray into petrochemicals. The Naphtha Cracker is designed to produce 800,000 TPA of ethylene and will source feedstock from IndianOil’s Gujarat Refinery in Western India and Panipat and Mathura Refineries in the North. The Cracker Unit at Panipat will also produce 600 KTA of Propylene, which will act as feed for downstream polymer units like Polypropylene Unit (600,000 MTPA), Linear Low Density/ High Density Polyethylene Swing Unit (350,000 MTPA), High Density Polyethylene unit (300,000 MTPA) and Mono Ethylene Glycol unit (300,000 MTPA).
These polymer products will be used for the manufacture of moulded plastic containers/barrels, heavy duty films, stretch wrap films, shopping bags, automobile parts, pipes and sheets, moulded furniture, Yarn & Fibre and many more household & industrial items. The Naphtha Cracker complex along with the PX-PTA units will have a synergistic impact on the growth of downstream industries for the production of Polyester Staple Fibre (PSF), Polyester Filament Yarn (PFY) and Textiles.
Based on the above raw material availability, there will be a steady growth of related industries in this region which is expected to develop into a world scale petrochemical hub of the country helping push Haryana as one of the top states in petrochemicals production in the country.
The completion of the Panipat Naphtha Cracker in 46 months(it went on-stream in March 2010) compares with the global standards for similar capacity plants and is ahead of the average time taken in setting up similar units in India. The Panipat Refinery, IndianOil’s seventh and most technically advanced Public Sector refinery of lndia is today one of South East Asia’s largest integrated petrochemicals plants. The Refinery meets the demand for petroleum products in not only Haryana but also for the entire North-West Region including Punjab, J&K, Himachal, Chandigarh, Uttaranchal state and parts of Rajasthan & Delhi.
The Panipat Refinery doubled its refining capacity from 6 MMT/yr to 12 MMT/yr in 2006 with the commissioning of its Expansion Project. With a further enhancement of the refining capacity by 3 MMTPA in 2010, the IndianOil group refining capacity is now 65.7 MMTPA, making the company the nation’s No. 1 Refiner.
