42,000 new LPG connections soon
New Delhi   10-Jul-2007
Cooking gas companies will issue 42,000 new domestic connections before August 15 in Kerala as an "Onam gift to the people of the State," Food and Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran has said. He gave this news at a press conference after a discussion with top executives of IndianOil, Bharat Petroleum (BP) and Hindustan Petroleum (HP) here on Monday. IndianOil will issue 30,000 new connections, clearing all applications pending till June 30. BP and HP will give 7,000 and 5,000 new connections respectively. None of these companies have been entertaining applications for a second cylinder for quite some time. The companies have now agreed to accept such requests after Onam. Together, these companies will open 48 new distribution agencies across the State this year to make their distribution network more efficient. Mr. Divakaran said consumer complaints were discussed at the meeting. Many consumers felt that they should not be pressed to buy gas stoves from the distribution agents at the time of receiving new gas connections. The oil companies told the meeting that this was being done only for the safety of the consumers, since the stoves sold thus satisfied certain quality norms. Fuel efficiency too was a concern. He said the cooking gas companies did not approve of their distribution agents imposing delivery charge for consumers residing within 5 km from the distribution points.
