Customer is primarily concerned for supply security. Quality, price and other issues can be addressed amicably once supply assurances and delivery are established. Timely supply and robust logistics adds to negotiating capability of supplier and provides an edge over competition. An effective supply chain management comprises of various elements of warehousing, inbound/ outbound logistics, operations, clearances and documentation. All the elements are inter related and closely-knit through human beings of varied talents/ capabilities and educational/ cultural backgrounds. Free flow of information from one element to the other along the value chain helps in timely and accurate execution of intended activity. The information flow & communication in all the elements of SCM is broadly at three hierarchical levels – at operating level, manager level and stakeholder level. The information flow and the communication are generally seen at lowest and highest level (need based & also in emergencies) but perhaps found wanted at middle level. The reason behind such pattern is that stakeholder has direct interests in the business and operating crew has direct job in hand and has to deliver the goods. It may be relevant to mention here that middle level has direct linkages with all the elements as well as all levels in whole value chain, which is generally not the case with stakeholder and operating level. Maximum communication and inflow from this level could immensely benefit the SCM and make the logistics very robust and reliable. Human links of an SCM model are depicted below both at different levels and elements
