Mr. G Bhanumurthy, ED (Guwahati Refinery), commissioned the Nucleonic level detector at the Refinery in the presence of DGMs, HODs and the operating staff recently. This control is designed to maximise outage of hydrocarbons treated during each batch and minimise anti-foaming quantity to be used during the operation. The system is based on the principle that hydrogen absorbs energy from fast neutrons at a rate substantially greater than any other element. When the material containing hydrogen is subjected to fast neutron bombardment, the hydrogen atoms absorb fast neutron energy and reduces back scattering of slow neutrons. The number of slow neutrons produced is directly proportional to the hydrogen density. The slow neutrons are detected with a gas filled ionisation chamber. The gas becomes ionised and the charged atoms are collected on the center electrode, producing a small Picoampere current which is converted to a digital signal and sent to the transmitter. The transmitter then converts the detector digital signal to a linearised 4-20 mA dc output signal. Six new Nucleonic type (Radioactive) Level instruments have been installed to measure the level of coke inside coke chambers of DCU. These instruments will detect not only the Level of coke but also the level of foam and water inside the coke chambers. It will help in better operation of coke chambers and save anti-foaming agent.
