New Delhi   30-Jul-2007
“Every one of us has a moral obligation to protect and preserve environment…I urge each one of you present here to pledge to plant a tree every year,” said Mr. R K Ghosh, ED (Haldia Refinery), He inaugurated the ‘Vanomahotsab’ (the planting of trees) ceremony on July 29, 2007, in the premises of St. Xaviers School in Haldia Refinery Township by planting a sapling. In his address Mr. Ghosh said, "We won't have a society if we destroy the environment. Bountiful Earth stands for ever-lasting life, ever prepared to selflessly energize man. But the destruction of natural resources, rapid industrialisation, urbanisation and deforestation has adversely affected the eco system. It is time to set the house in order. Today’s’ Vanomahotsab is one the various initiatives of Haldia Refinery to give human face to environmental issues and the significance of tree plantation. As the leading corporate citizen it is our primary duty to help Govt. and communities to protect and preserve ecological balance for posterity.” He added that, “Vanomahotsab, is as old as the Indian civilization. In the Vedic culture of India, trees were planted and worshipped not only as rituals but for environmental as well as medicinal values. The sloka - Sujalam, Sufalam, Sasya, Syamalam… emphasizes on the vitality of tree plantation and the flora and fauna. From today we must think innovatively and constructively in our plantation initiatives… I urge each one of you present here to take a pledge to plant a tree every year. By doing this we will take the first step in protecting environment for our future generation.” Mr. M. Vijaywargiya, GM (Projects), Mr. K C Dutta, GM (TS), DGMs, other IOCians, representatives of Haldia Refinery Employees Union (HREU), IndianOil Officers’ Association (IOOA), academicians and students planted saplings. Around 2,000 saplings were planted and distributed for plantation in and around the industrial neighbourhood of Haldia and the Refinery Township. As on date, more than 38,114 trees are thriving in the Refinery and the township since 1974 onwards, when Haldia Refinery started organizing Vanomahotsabs.. Besides, Haldia Refinery Township has developed more than five nurseries for nurturing the greenery of the township and for planting saplings throughout the year on a continuous basis.
