The growing demand of petroleum products has forced the government to look for other alternatives. The recent rise in international oil price has led many countries lo seek gainful use of coal reserves for energy extraction. The government has approved captive mining (or production of gas through coal gasification and liquefaction. The underground coal gasification aims a extracting energy from coal seams which cannot be mined through conventional methods. Underground coal gasification is a recognized dean-coal technology while surface gasification of coal is also a proven technology. Both can be taken up as per requirements of the industry. Coal liquefaction aims at converting coal to liquid fuels, for which also commercially proven technology is available. South Africa has been successfully producing gasoline and fuel oil from coal for quite some time. Coal reserves in India are amenable to coal gasification and liquefaction. Unfulfilled promise Oil companies have failed to fulfill their promise 10 the civil aviation ministry that they would bring down price of aviation turbine fuel (ATF). At a recent meeting between ministry officials and oil companies at Rajiv Gandhi Bhawan, a commitment was made by the latter to come out with measures to cut ATF prices within three weeks. The deadline has passed, but no action seems to be forth coming from oil PSUs despite the fact that anguished civil aviation ministry officials sent reminders lo them. The civil aviation minister is now bent on resorting 10 a new plan of action. Watch out for more on this front as crude oil prices are testing the peak yet again.
