After the civic nuclear agreement, India and the US have signed MoU for co-operation in gas hydrates. The two countries aim to enhance and accelerate understanding of the geologic occurrence, distribution and production of natural gas hydrates along the continental margin of India and in the US. The directorate general of hydrocarbons (DGH) and US department of energy (DoE) will also exchange scientific and technical information and scientific personnel, conduct workshops. Informed sources told FE that the DGH and the DoE would extend cooperation in exploration of natural gas hydrates, quantification of natural gas hydrates in marine sediments, laboratory analysis and characterization of-natural gas hydrates and resource assessment. According to the MoU, the two countries will co-operate in the development of pilot production test plan for marine hydrates, field testing of predictability from hydrate reservoirs involving various US departments and agencies. Moreover, the DGH and DoE will also be associated in data access and archiving, facilitation of establishment of gas hydrate technology center in India and facilitation of the transfer of technology for hydrate exploration and evelopment. Sources said that as per the MoU, DGH and DoE might invite organizations in their respective countries to work together collaboratively on gas hydrates. MoU is crucial especially when the petroleum ministry had launched the national gas hydrate programme(NGHP) for exploratory research on the natural gas hydrates 'in India. NGHP is represented by the DGH under the petroleum ministry. The participating undertakings in NGHP include ONGC, GAIL India, Oil India, National Institute of Oceanography, National Institute of Ocean Technology and National Geophysical Research Institute. DGH on behalf of NGHP is pursuing drilling and sampling of gas hydrates to achieve long-term goal of development of this natural energy resources in a cost-effective and efficient manner.
