The Human Resources Group of IndianOil has been reflecting deeply on formulating an efficient and effective retention strategy to contain attrition in the Corporation so that the pool of expertise and manpower is sustained to give a concrete shape to the glorious corporate vision in the coming years. To begin with, the HR group took up the initiative of understanding the collective perspective of the Corporation’s work force through an Employee Engagement Survey (EES). EES was primarily intended to assess the extent of the employees’ commitment to the Company, belief in the values the Company stands for, pride in work, and motivation to go the `extra mile’. International Management Institute, Delhi, was engaged to conduct the survey in two phases – for officers (A to F grade) and workmen. The survey of officers has been completed in the first phase. The questionnaire was based on two key parameters – job involvement & organisational commitment – and about 14 drivers of engagement ranging from work-life balance, individual growth opportunities to monetary/non-monetary benefits. The responses of a target population of over 1,482 executives were evaluated on 16 significant parameters, all of which are integral part of work life. The findings collated at the corporate level show a high level of involvement on the issues of benefits, stakeholders, job content and co-workers whilst issues like learning organisation, communication, recognition, career opportunity, leadership, learning & development and HR alignment showed scope for some improvement for optimum benefit. The survey brought out the desire for a high level of improvement on parameters like decision-making and work-life balance. The survey revealed that executives in the age group of 22-30, who constitute 15% of the officers’ strength, lower level of enagement as compared to older ones. Pointing this out, Shri V.C.Agrawal, Director (HR), says, “We realised that young people have different expectations, needs and requirements. And we are taking action based on this feedback we have received.” At the recently concluded Conference of HR heads held on 16-17 May, 2007 at the Corporate Office, interim action plans based on the survey were deliberated upon. The findings of the survey at each location will be validated with the line managers before firming up the action plan to be rolled out. The Human Resources group extends a special thanks to all the respondents who wholeheartedly participated in the survey, giving their precious and valuable inputs.
