Rising dependence on fossil fuels, clubbed with their rising prices and environmental impact, has forced the world to examine alternative sources of energy, especially renewable sources like wind, solar, biomass, small hydro projects etc. The potential of renewable energy in India (excluding solar energy) is estimated to be around 84,776 MW (2.5 times the currently installed hydro power capacity). As on 30.9.2006, the total installed capacity of renewable energy in India was 9,094 MW, of which grid-interactive power was 8,996 MW. During the XI Plan, a physical target of 15,000 MW with an outlay of Rs. 3,925 crore is proposed for renewable power generation.
