The entire 'Indane family' came together to mark the occasion of silver jubilee celebrations of LPG marketing by the Assam Oil Division of IndianOil. The joy of the IndianOil officials, dealers and distributors of the LPG brand 'Indane' was clearly visible. It was on this day 25 years back that the first truck of LPG cylinders produced by Oil India Ltd rolled out of the new LPG plant at Duliajan,Assam. The journey made by Assam Oil Division has not always been smooth sailing but have resulted in effective market penetration. Added to this, the safety record of 'Indane' has been impeccable over the years. In his keynote address, Mr. PL Baruah (ED), Assam Oil Division, said "But if it was a stellar effort at expanding business opportunities, new challenges lie ahead". Mr. Baruah attributed the success of LPG marketing to team effort and foresight and said that LPG use has gained grounds across the North-east. He underlined the recent emergence of auto-gas as the new territory in which LPG could make inroads considering that demand for automobiles is growing at 20 percent every year and urged the dealers and distributors to take advantage of this new development. Mr. Baruah revealed that one dispensing station of LPG has been commissioned in Guwahati, and three more are in the pipeline. Speaking as the guest of honour, Mr. Pradyut Bordoloi, State Minister of Commerce and Industry, congratulated the Assam Oil Division for its success in marketing 'Indane' and recalled his own fond memories of working for the company. Mr. B K Das (MD), NRL, mentioned, several innovative steps taken by the Assam Oil Division that saw the growth of the LPG network. Several other dignitaries also attended the function, including Mr. RK Dutta (CMD), Stewart and Lloyd, Mr. G Bhanumoorthy (ED) Guwahati Refinery, among others. Several notable figures associated with LPG Marketing were felicitated on the occasion. Although erstwhile Assam Oil Company was marketing LPG but it was after nationalization and subsequent incorporation of Assam Oil Company with IndianOil that it embarked on the task of marketing LPG on a broader scale. When Assam Oil started LPG marketing in 1982, it did not have a single bottling plant of its own but the company currently owns state of art bottling plants in North Guwahati, Silchar, Gopanari (near Digboi), Kimin (Arunachal Pradesh), Dimapur (Nagaland), Mualkhang (Mizoram) and Sekmai (Manipur). The remarkable achievements made by AOD in the last 25 years are evident from the following facts: (a) Sales zoomed from 1674 MT in 1982-83 to 165006 MT in 2007-07(b) Number of LPG distributorship grew from 22 in 1982-83 to 276 in 2006-07 (c) Number of locations with LPG distributorship grew from 18 in 1982-83 to 196 in 2006-07 (d) Number of families served grew from .30 lakh in 1982-83 to 17.07 lakh in 2006-07 covering a population of 1.1 crore (e) From being used mostly in the urban areas, LPG cylinders have now penetrated deep into the rural areas including some remote and inaccessible places in north east. This was possible due to the growth in LPG sales powered by the dynamic marketing of Assam Oil Division. It needs mention here that LPG marketing in the North East has always been a tough job because of the terrain and prevalence of myths and superstitions. At one particular point of time, the people were reluctant to use the cooking fuel as they considered it to be risky and unsafe. There has been sea-change now with LPG cylinders being a ubiquitous sight as it has now turned out to be the most favoured and economic cooking fuel," said Ashok Kumar Bishaya (President), Silver Jubilee Celebration Committee. Digboi, the headquarters of the Assam Oil Division of the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. is regarded as the birthplace the country's petroleum industry. Commissioned in 1901, Digboi Refinery is India's oldest operating refinery and one of the oldest operating refineries in the world. It came into the fold of the Indian Oil Corporation ltd. by an Act of Parliament on 14th October, 1981 and became Assam Oil Division of Indian Oil Ltd. Assam Oil Division has been providing service to the nation by meeting the requirements of the Defence sector. Assam Oil Division's state of art LPG distribution system has contributed indirectly towards the preservation of the environment, conservation of forests and in promoting an eco-friendly fuel thereby saving huge forest resources like firewood and coal which was earlier used for cooking purpose.
