India’s Port Infrastructure
New Delhi   29-Aug-2007
Development of world-class port infrastructure is critical for India to sustain its global competitiveness. Indian ports with an aggregate capacity of 616.5 MMT, handle 95% of India’s merchandise trade. At present, Indian ports suffer from high congestion and low operational efficiency levels. Rapid growth in India’s foreign trade has led to significant growth in port traffic (CAGR of 10.5% for the period 2001 to 2006), putting considerable pressure on port infrastructure. Investments to the tune of Rs.10,000 crore are required for development of India’s port infrastructure.
