IndianOil – Fuelling innocent smiles in Assam

IndianOil has taken a big step forward to return the smiles to the faces of children and young adults who have been living in isolation with cleft lip and palate deformities. The medical condition of cleft lip is an unfortunate birth defect affecting maximum people in the North East. There are over 44000 afflicted persons in Assam. Acting as a good Samaritan, IndianOil has helped put smiles back on the faces of more than 200 children in the state suffering from this condition. The project to help young children with the medical condition of cleft lip was conceptualised by IndianOil-AOD State Office in association with Mission Smile, an Assam-based NGO specializing in craniofacial deformities.

dir_plConsidering the enormous size of the problem, Health & Family Welfare department, Government of Assam has entered into an MoU with Mission Smile wherein 50% of the cost of surgery is borne by the Government, while the rest is shared by donors. IndianOil has shared 50% of the corrective surgery cost for 204 patients from 26 districts of Assam. The surgeries were carried out at the well-equipped Cleft Care Centre built by Mission Smile in assistance with Government of Assam and other organizations. Of these 93 patients received treatment for cleft lip and 109 patients for cleft palate. Another 2 received surgery for facial clefts.

In line with the CSR vision and mission, IndianOil’s CSR budget is allocated and spent on high priority areas viz. safe drinking water, healthcare & sanitation, education & employment enhancing vocational skills, empowering women & socially/economically backward groups, rural development, etc. The initiatives are undertaken preferably in the vicinity of IndianOil’s major installations/establishments for improving the quality of life of the concerned communities, which include marginalized groups such as SCs, STs, etc. During 2015-16, Rs.156.68 crore was invested in various CSR projects across the country. Under Govt. of India’s Swachh Bharat - Swachh Vidyalaya Abhiyaan, during 2014-15 and 2015-16, 2885 toilets were constructed / repaired in various schools across 16 States. Under LPG scheme for BPL families, so far, 32.4 lakh BPL families have benefitted across India.
