MOC between National Centre of Catalysis Research (NCCR) and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.
New Delhi   11-Sep-2007
IndianOil's R&D Centre and National Centre of Catalysis Research (NCCR) have signed an agreement on 10th September 2007 at IIT Madras, Chennai for joint development of process for preparation of alumina with special characteristics. Mr Sarthak Behuria, Chairman , Mr. Anand Kumar, Director (R&D), Mr. K. K. Acharya, MD (CPCL), Professor M.S. Ananth, Director (IIT Madras) and Professor B. Viswanathan, Director (NCCR) were present . The agreement was signed between Mr Satish Makhija, ED (R&D) and Mr. T.T. Narendran, Dean (ICSR), IIT Madras. Mr Sarthak Behuria said that the collaboration with NCCR would enable IndianOil to join a select league of companies for the development of high-end catalysts for refining applications. Mr. Behuria also announced contribution of Rs. fifty lakh to IIT Madras for setting up a 'Centre for Asphalt Science & Technology'. Such centres of excellence, like 'National Centre for Catalysis Research', and the 'Centre for Asphalt Science & Technology' are very necessary for promotion of scientific research in India as they will lead to setting up of vital infrastructure, in turn leading to basic and applied research in catalysts and asphalt. These centres will also help in generating specialised research scientists and engineers to be absorbed by R&D institutions such as IndianOil's R&D. National Centre for Catalysis Research (NCCR) at IIT Madras setup under the aegis of Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India is a premier research centre working in the frontier areas of catalysis. The Centre under the stewardship of Prof. B. Viswanathan has considerable expertise in the area of synthesis of materials having catalytic applications like alumina, zeolites and various catalysts and also in fundamental science of catalysis. The technology alliance compliments the strengths of IndianOil's R&D Centre & NCCR and will utilize this synergy for the development of catalytic materials aimed towards making the country self-sufficient in the niche area of catalyst technology. Alumina is a key constituent of various refining catalyst. Depending on its applications, the physico-chemical properties of alumina are tuned by various preparation and modification approaches. The alumina required for each application is tailor made and at times are not commercially available. Therefore it is required to be developed indigenously. The alumina prepared by this collaboration will be used for making cost effective and state-of-the-art hydroprocessing catalysts.
