Petrochemicals group introduces Digital Route survey and Distance verification
New Delhi   19-Sep-2007
Recently the Petrochemical group launched a path breaking initiative of digital route survey and distance verification for freight assessment purposes. The new method of digital survey of identifying the shortest, motorable, all weather routes was brought in by the group to replace the tedious system of route & distance identification by physical travel and massive data collation exercises hitherto practiced by IndianOil. The new initiative was implemented on September 1, 2007. A pioneering vision and relentless quest to transform business practices saw the group partnering with `Survey of India' (SOI), a department under Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India to launch digital route survey between supply - delivery points anywhere across the country. SOI was established in 1767 and has taken up complete physical survey of the country. It has 23 field directorates spread across the country that updates various route additions every six months. SOI has carried digitalization of their physical maps, which has been sewn together for seamless viewing. Earth curvature correction factor also is suitably incorporated in these maps with scientific derivations. The distances have been provided by SOI using digital maps of scale 1:50,000. With the electronic maps, the shortest route between supply and delivery destination city pair is identified at SOI, Dehradun. Their field force undertakes last mile distance verification from GPS identified city co -ordinates. The route including updated last mile distances is sewn as complete digital map to arrive at final route and distance. SOI is Govt. of India's official arm to issue/ certify maps and commands high credibility. The methodology adopted by them is highly accurate and reliable, besides being cost effective and safe method of RTD verification. With the implementation of the digitally verified routes and distances as part of the new LAB transportation contract from Gujarat Refinery Installation, IndianOil has launched a cost effective business solution with a high reliability levels. By the old method, the route was pre-decided once in three years whilst the new method will ensure that re-routement takes place on a yearly basis. This will facilitate savings on transportation as well as expenses towards physical verification. The day is not far when the rest of the industry will tread the innovative path adopted efficiently by the Petrochemical group of IndianOil with the Digital route survey and distance verification.
