New Delhi 21-May-2007
Every year May 21st is observed as Anti -Terrorism Day in memory of Late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Rajiv Gandhi's death anniversary is observed on this day as "Anti-Terrorism Day" not only to check the menace of rising terrorism all over India but also to maintain peace, social good will and create awareness in the society. The important feature of the observance of the Anti -Terrorism Day is the “pledge-taking” ceremony that happens in forenoon in all government offices, public sector undertakings and other public institutions. The pledge reads as follows: "We, the people of India, having abiding faith in our country’s tradition of non-violence and tolerance, hereby solemnly affirm to oppose with our strength, all forms of terrorism and violence. We pledge to uphold and promote peace, social harmony, and understanding among all fellow human beings and fight the forces of disruption threatening human lives and values". The objective behind observance of this day is to wean away the youth from terrorism and the cult of violence by highlighting the sufferings of common people and showing how it is prejudicial to the national interest. These objectives can be achieved in more ways than one. Namely, by organizing debates/discussions in schools, colleges and universities or holding of symposiums/seminars, lectures on the dangers of terrorism & violence. One can make appropriate projection through the media i.e. newspapers, journals, magazines, All India Radio and Doordarshan etc. including putting posters and pamphlets or highlight the ill-effects of violence and terrorism by involving prominent sports, film and other prominent personalities and distribution of t-shirts with attractive anti - violence/terrorist slogans. Voluntary organizations, social and cultural bodies can also be engaged by having their own programmes through lectures, talks, discussions, musical and recitation programmes and cultural functions.
