Coal is the mainstay of the Indian energy sector. It constitutes 52% of the Indian energy basket and its share is projected to remain above 50% in the next 25 years. Owing to the abundant coal reserves in the country, traditionally, most of the demand has been met by domestic production. However, in the recent years, due to demand out pacing supply, imports have been on the rise and this trend is likely to continue. Moreover, this sector continues to be mired, among other things, by low levels of labour productivity, inefficient mining practices and absence of a regulatory authority.
