IndianOil Sportstars Shine at TOISA-2018

At a glittering function held at Mumbai on 26th February 2018 the Times of India Sports Awards TOISA -2018 were conferred on some of the most outstanding sports performers in India.

TOISA with its third edition has emerged as a gold standard for sporting excellence. The eminent jury was headed by Olympic Gold medallist Abhinav Bindra. Other members were Gautam Gambhir, Bhaichung Bhutia, Devendra Jhajharia and Reeth Abraham.

It is heartening that among the awardees were 5 IOCians .

Ace shuttler IOCian Kidambi Srikanth who had a dream run in the international circuit in 2017 won the top honours and was declared the SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR. Currently ranked World No # 3 he became the first Indian player to claim four super series titles in a year ( Indonesia Open, Australia Open, French Open & Denmark Open)

Teenage sensation IOCian Prithvi Shaw took centre-stage amidst great applause as he was voted the EMERGING PLAYER by popular choice. An amazingly talented player he was the captain of the Indian U-19 World Cup cricket squad that beat Australia in the finals to bring home the World Cup.

IOCian D Harika was the Jury's choice as Chess Player of the year. In 2017 she had claimed a hat trick of bronzes at the World Championships in Tehran. She was also adjudged the best woman player at the Reykjavik Open where she claimed six wins, two draws, two losses to finish seventeenth.

IOCian Rohan Bopanna got the award for Tennis. In 2017 he teamed up with Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski to win the French Open mixed doubles title, becoming only the fourth Indian to have won a Grand Slam.

And finally, MENTOR OF THE YEAR AWARD went to IOCian PULLELA GOPICHAND, who is a national badminton coach, a Padma Bhushan awardee who's passion for badminton has turned India into a badminton super-power.
