Mathura & Panipat refineries win awards for Energy Management
New Delhi   25-Sep-2007
Refineries at Mathura and Panipat have won two prestigious awards for its energy conservation efforts from the Centre for High Technology (CHT), under the aegis of Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. The awards were presented by Mr. Murli Deora, Union Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas to Mr. B N Bankapur, Director (Refineries) at the CHT Refinery Technology Meet at Trivandrum recently. Mathura Refinery bagged the coveted Jawaharlal Nehru Centenary Award for energy conservation for the year 2006-07. The awards are based on the annual performance of the refineries in the area of energy conservation measured in terms of Specific Energy Consumption. Mathura Refinery is the first oil refinery in Asia and 3rd in the world to receive the ISO-14001 certification. Over the years, the refinery has emerged as a leader and role model for the industry by adopting effective measures for environmental protection. Panipat Refinery bagged the Oil & Gas Conservation Fortnight (OGCF) Award for the year 2007. The award is conferred on refineries on the basis of their performance in the area of steam leaks. Mr. Bankapur was accompanied by Mr. C Manoharan, ED (Panipat Refinery), to receive the award. Panipat Refinery is IndianOil's seventh and most technically advanced public sector refinery of lndia & one of South East Asia's largest integrated petrochemicals plants. As a result of various energy conservation measures undertaken at the IndianOil refineries, the specific energy consumption in terms of MBTU/BBL/NRGF in the year 2006-07 is down to 71 against the energy index of 73 in the year 2005-06 while the industry average has been 74 during 2006-07. Various energy optimization and hydrocarbon loss minimizing schemes have been implemented which have resulted in fuel savings to the tune of around 24,000 MT/year valued at about Rs 39 crores. Flare gas recovery at Mathura Refinery, low level heat recovery from tempered water system at Haldia Refinery, condensate recovery at Guwahati Refinery are some of the schemes implemented during the year. Recently commissioned energy conservation schemes in include installation of air pre-heater in Visbreaker at Mathura Refinery and Hydrogen recovery from CCRU off gas at Gujarat Refinery. Major Encon schemes which are under implementation are yield and energy improvement at crude distillation units at Barauni Refinery, waste heat recovery for additional steam generation in sulphur recovery units at Panipat Refinery etc. Congratulations to the team!
