Giving Delhi a Green Identity -Introduction of BSVI grade fuels in Delhi NCT

To announce the introduction of BSVI fuels in Delhi NCT, a function was organized on 2nd April, 2018 at the Constitution Club of India in New Delhi. Hon’ble Minister, Petroleum & Natural Gas and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship,Mr. Dharmendra Pradhan dedicated the roll out of BSVI grade fuels to the people of Delhi in the presence of Ms. Sunita Narain, Director General, Centre for Science & Environment (CSE), Ms. Urvashi Sadhwani, Senior Advisor, MoP&NG, Sh. Sandeep Poundrik, Jt. Secretary (R), MoP&NG, Mr. Sanjiv Singh, Chairman, IndianOil and other senior officials from MoP&NG and Oil Marketing Companies.
Mr. Dharmendra Pradhan, speaking on the occasion said that the introduction of BSVI is a momentous occasion for the people of Delhi. He said that the decision to advance the BSVI roll out to 1st April, 2018 demonstrated the commitment of the government to deliver energy justice to the common man.
“The decision to leapfrog to BSVI fuels instead of BSV has been taken to meet global standards on Carbon emission. India is now into an elite list of nations to have implemented EURO-VI emission norms, a step that will lead to significant reduction in vehicular pollution” said the Hon’ble Minister while addressing the gathering.
Mr. Pradhan said that introduction of BSVI compliant fuel will help our Capital city lower the alarming levels of air pollution and is a step forward in providing sustainable solutions towards a cleaner and healthier future.
Adding further, Mr. Pradhan complimented the Oil Marketing Companies for going thhe extra mile to the advance the roll out of BSVI grade fuel in Delhi from April 2018 instead of April 2020. He also urged the automobile industry to expedite the introduction of new BSVI compliant vehicles in the market. He also assured them that the government is committed to meet the deadline of pan India BSVI roll out by 1st April, 2020.
Ms. Sunita Narain, Director General, Centre for Science & Environment (CSE), praised the Government for its proactive step to introduce BSVI grade fuels ahead of its scheduled timeline. She said that the Government has walked the talk on BSVI fuels and now it is incumbent on automobile industry to fulfill their commitment.
Elaborating on the introduction of BSVI fuels, Mr. Sanjiv Singh highlighted that India is the first country to move from BSIV grade fuel to BSVI grade fuel in a short span of three years. He thanked the Hon’ble Minister for trusting the oil industry to meet the challenge of launching the most superior fuel standard of the world in Delhi ahead of schedule.
BS-VI fuel will bring down Sulphur content to 10 ppm from the existing level of 50 ppm –a resounding 80 per cent reduction that makes this fuel extremely clean. This will improve emissions from the existing fleet, even from the older vehicles on road, while allowing more advanced emissions control systems to be fitted in BS-VI vehicles when they begin to roll out.
BSVI fuels would be supplied through the 388 retail outlets of IOC, BPC and HPC, the three oil marketing companies. The OMC’s are investing nearly 30,000 crore to shift to the latest BSVI fuel specifications.
Bharat stage emission standards -known as Bharat Stage (BS) - are emission standards to regulate the output of air pollutants from internal combustion engines and spark-ignition engines equipment, including motor vehicles and are inspired by the European regulations. With the launch of BSVI in NCT, Delhi, India’s emission standards will be on par with those in the US, Japan and the European Union.
Currently BSIV grade fuels are being supplied across India since April, 2017 with 50 parts per Million (ppm) of sulphur content .In 2016, the government had decided to leapfrog from BS IV to BS VI by 2020 by skipping the BS V stage all together.
