The rising and highly volatile global oil prices and the environmental hazards posed by the use of fossil fuels have prompted countries across the globe to consider bio-fuel commercialization programs. Brazil is the world leader in bio-fuel production. In India, the government has mandated 5% blending of ethanol in petrol and is promoting doping of diesel with bio-diesel in the near future. The high relative cost of production of bio-fuel is the biggest barrier to their large-scale commercialization. Development of next generation bio-fuels, which can use a wide range of biomass based on newer technologies, is seen as the way forward.
