Rs 18,919 cr approved for Bhatinda oil refinery
New Delhi   23-Jun-2007
Ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-Bhartiya Janta party and opposition Congress party on Friday thanked the central government and congratulated each other in the Vidhan Sabha over clearance of Bathinda Oil refinery-Punjab Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal congratulated people of Punjab and said that Bathinda refinery named after Guru Gobind Singh will be built at a cost of Rs 18919 crores and will create tremendous job avenues for people of Punjab. The statement red by Badal goes as "I felicitate the whole house and Punjabis on the decision of the Union Government allowing world's leading industrialist Laxmi Mittal to have joint venture with HPCL for construction of Bathinda Refinery. This is an occasion of profound significance and joy for all of us. With this decision, decks have been cleared for the setting up of the biggest development project in the history of the State. This will transform the economic landscape of the state". Badal said that Mittal would initially invest Rs 3365 Crores in these projects. This project would refine nine million metric tones crude oil every year. With the completion of this project, over 1.5 lakh Punjabis would get direct and indirect employment. While addressing to speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon, Badal said that for him personally and for all Punjabis in general, the clearance of this refinery is like a dream come true, during my previous tenure as Chief Minister, we had made tireless efforts to get this project for the state. We repeatedly took this case to the then Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee and were able to get this project sanctioned for the state. At my personal request, Vajpayee himself came over to lay the foundation stone of this project. We gave all the necessary clearances for this project. 1200 acres of land was acquired and a four-lane highway for linking the project to Bathinda was also constructed. This has finally exposed the hollowness of the propaganda about investors losing confidence about putting their money in Punjab after the formation of the new Government in the State. "I am proud to announce that investment made by Mittal in this refinery is the largest ever Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the history of the country.
