Minor Fire at catalyst area of Polypropylene unit of Panipat Naphtha Cracker

A minor fire took place at the separate catalyst area of Polypropylene unit of Panipat naphtha Cracker today at about 10.45 am. The fire broke out from a source tanker containing TEAL, a chemical used as catalyst for polymerization reaction. The catalyst is used from disposable vessel (Tanker) and is not an integrated part of process plant.

The typical characterstic of the chemical is of pyropheric nature, which once in contact with air , catches fire. It cannot be extinguished by using water or foam and is best allowed to be burnt out in containment.

The fire had ocurred inside the Naphtha Cracker Complex without any damage to any process unit. The fire was contained in the specified area and was extinguished. Two employees sustained minor injuries, out of which one was discharged after first aid and the other is being treated at hospital for suspected fracture in the leg.

An official enquiry will be instituted into the cause of the accident.
