Petroleum Minister Murli Deora has said the Centre is trying its best not to increase the prices of petroleum products like petrol and diesel even though international prices of oil had registered an upward trend in the past few months. "The international prices of oil have increased from $40 to about $62 a barrel so there is no question of reducing the prices of petrol and diesel," he said. "On the contrary, we are trying our level best to see that the prices of petroleum products like LPG, kerosene, diesel and petrol do not rise even as the prices of oil has been on the rise in the global market," said Deora after commissioning the first stretch of the Dahej-Panvel-Dabhol pipeline, the 100-km part from Dahej to Surat, which will feed natural gas to the beleaguered Dabhol power project in Maharashtra. The Dabhol power plant would start generating electricity using natural gas by mid-June once work on the 576-km long gas pipeline was completed, he added. With gas flowing from Dahej, where Petronet LNG imports and regassifies liquefied natural gas, into the first stretch of the 576-km Dahej-Panvel-Dabhol pipeline, decks have also been cleared for resumption of the work on a 12-km stretch of the pipeline in Chourasiya Taluka hi Surat district. The minister said problems with the Gujarat government regarding laying of the 12-km stretch have been "sorted out". Work on the 12-km length was stalled as the Gujarat government opposed the project m grounds that the gas pricing formula worked out for Dabhol would result in rise in price of gas for industries in the state.
