The campus of the University of St. Gallen buzzed with activity during May 31-June 2, 2007, as about 600 global leaders and 200 bright students, the leaders of tomorrow, congregated in the sylvan surroundings for the annual Symposium of the University. The voices of the eminent speakers boomed as they collectively debated on the theme, ‘The Power of Natural Resources’. Expounding on the Hon’ble President’s dream for an Energy Independent India, Mr. Sarthak Behuria, Chairman, IndianOil, said emphatically, “India faces major hurdles in making available the energy required to fuel its booming economy. India’s energy needs are expected to grow by 40% in the next five years and more than double by the year 2020”. Speaking on the topic - Empowering National Economy – How to Meet the Growing Energy Demand of a Rising Country, Mr. Behuria drew from the IndianOil experience and said, “As India’s flagship national oil company, IndianOil has a dream - to fuel the progress and prosperity of over one billion countrymen. IndianOil has a series of well-coordinated and strategic initiatives to meet the growing energy needs of our nation.” During his address, Mr. Behuria made a strong case for cross-linkage of domestic and international energy supplies for energy security, and informed the global audience, “India is not looking at energy security in isolation from the rest of the world…..We believe that India can strengthen her energy security and share in the prosperity of the global economy by working cooperatively with key countries and institutions to expand the sources and nature of global energy supplies….. We believe in a collaborative approach to access global natural resources, which are not uniformly distributed across the world. Since the demand and supply centres are not co-located, international collaboration and cooperation are absolutely essential to achieve energy security for a rising economy such as India.” Mr. Behuria closed to a wide round of applause by saying, …”for a country like India, with a population of over one billion and high projected economic growth rate, no single energy resource or technology can act as a panacea to address all issues related to availability of fuel supplies, environmental impact and climate change. Therefore, it is necessary that all non-carbon emitting resources become an integral part of the energy mix – as diversified as possible – to ensure energy security.” The St. Gallen Symposium has established itself as a major event in the European calendar as the world’s leading platform for dialogue on key issues in management, the entrepreneurial environment and the interfaces between business, politics and society. This Symposium provides an opportunity for open, inspiring, multi-disciplinary and constructive discussions on the fundamental challenges faced by businesses and societies across the world. The event brings together an international group of participants: 600 prominent decision-makers in business, academia, politics and society, 200 outstanding students, specially selected to participate in the St. Gallen Symposium, and leading representatives of the world media.
